NYC’s 2025 Car-Free Streets: Expanding Public Space and Community Engagement
New York City is set to enhance its commitment to sustainable and community-friendly urban spaces in 2025, with expanded initiatives like Car-Free Earth Day and Summer Streets. These programs aim to promote environmental awareness, healthy recreation, and the reimagining of city streets as vibrant public spaces.
Car-Free Earth Day 2025: A Citywide Celebration
On Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) will host Car-Free Earth Day, opening 54 streets and plazas across all five boroughs exclusively to pedestrians and cyclists. This annual event encourages New Yorkers to embrace sustainable transportation and enjoy the city’s public spaces without vehicular traffic.
Programming at various locations will focus on themes such as climate change, sustainability, and environmental education. Activities will include informational booths, cultural performances, and interactive exhibits designed to engage the community in environmental activism.
As part of the celebration, Citi Bike will offer free one-day passes to all riders, promoting cycling as a green and healthy mode of transportation.

Summer Streets 2025: Expanding Across the Boroughs
Building on the success of previous years, Summer Streets 2025 will transform nearly 20 miles of city streets into car-free zones on select Saturdays, providing space for walking, cycling, and community activities. The program aims to encourage healthy recreation and sustainable transportation choices among New Yorkers.
While exact dates and locations are yet to be announced, the NYC DOT plans to include routes in all five boroughs, continuing the expansion that began in 2023. Participants can look forward to free activities at rest stops along the routes, including fitness classes, art installations, and educational workshops.
